Greening up the produce aisle
One of the baby steps to a greener life we took last year was using our mismatched collection of cloth totes as grocery bags. No more paper or plastic for us!
I'll be honest--it took us the better part of the year to consistently remember to take the bags with us to the grocery store. But once we got into the habit, I really started noticing the other disposable packaging that was coming home with us in those cloth sacks.
Our family buys a lot of produce. Which means we bring home a ton of plastic produce bags which are thrown away only to be replaced by new ones the next week. So I went searching for a greener option and found the cloth produce bags at AMK Designs. The simple drawstring bags add next to no weight and are easy to use--easier than opening some of those clingy plastic bags, as a matter of fact.
I went with AMK Designs out of the many reusable produce bag options out there for a few reasons. The strong mesh (not tulle) fabric leaves the produce stickers nicely visible for the checkers. They're a great size (the regular is 8"x11", the extra-large 15"x13"). They come with a tiny stuff sack that clips on to a tote strap and easily holds my six regular and three extra-large produce bags. And if they get dirty, I can pop them in with the dishes and give them a quick hand wash. All around, a good green purchase at a great price.
