A subscription of their own
When a relative gave my son a subscription to Highlights High Five for his second birthday, I was skeptical. A magazine for a pre-reader? Really?
It wasn't long before I was a fan. Designed for children ages 2-6, High Five is a spin-off of Highlights, the beloved magazine of children (and pediatricians' offices) for sixty years. Each forty-page monthly issue has a mix of read-aloud stories, picture puzzles, and simple crafts/activities. The back pages pull out to make a storybook or game. Everything from the layout to the illustrations seems well-designed to engage the preschool set. My toddler especially enjoys spotting odd details in the "That's Silly!" picture game.
My son likes that he has a magazine of his very own, just like mommy and daddy. I appreciate the way it encourages his language and reasoning skills--and that it is blissfully ad-free. But most of all I love seeing the smile that breaks out on his face when he spots it in our mailbox and watching him curl up on his bed to thumb through the pages at night. It turns out it was a great birthday gift, after all.
